Greece, a love story

Family Cycling Tours

Greece is a wise choice for your family’s vacation.   At home everybody tends to be running in different directions, but Greeks have a “go slow” approach to life known as "siga siga."  Adapting to this tempo, your family will share quality time together in a land with spectacular scenery, a charming culture and glorious historical treasures. Greece is a family-centered country and children are at the hub. Resident or foreign, children of any nationality are adored and doted over in this child-friendly country.

We have designed a few tours specifically for families, listed in the chart below. Yet, several of our guided and self-guided tours are either family friendly or can be customized to accommodate families. Examples are Crusader Paths, Saronic Jewels, Lesvos & Chios. Adjustments must be made in the prices to fit your family's party. All family tours require a support vehicle, except a vehicle is optional for Junior Argonauts.

FAMILY FAQs

Optimum Ages

Whatever age your children are, your family is welcome in Greece. A customized itinerary for your family will be suited to the ages of your family when you provide us each family members ability level. Some tours require a certain age limit. A parent or legal guardian must accompany any child under 18 years old. If a child is under nine, or unable at any age to ride the route, the support vehicle can take the child and parent to that day's destination and return to accompany the rest of the riders on the route.

Choosing Dates and Parties

Families and friends tend to prefer their own company which is why our family tours are self-guided where you choose your own dates. If you wish to be with another family because your children want playmates and/or to reduce costs, tell us and we will match you up with a family of similar aged members likewise looking for company and/or lower costs. You agree on a tour date between you.

Safety and Child Friendly

Greece provides a safe environment for children.   Outside major cities, crime is practically non-existent. (Watch out for pickpockets in Athens).  If you get lost walking or biking don't worry about making a wrong turn into the wrong part of town – there is no such thing as a dangerous neighborhood in Greece like you might find in other countries.

Greece is a traditional family-oriented society where children are the center of household attention. Many accommodations throughout Greece offer child-care services, including the Athens Airport which has an attended area for children to pre-occupy themselves while parents arrange travel procedures. Children are welcome in most all establishments.

Bicycle Needs

All family bike tours include vehicle support with a bilingual driver. The vehicle carries bike tools, spare parts, floor pump, snacks, water, ice cooler, first aid kit, day packs, luggage and a lift whenever needed. Driver is available basically for an eight-hour day.

Bicycle choices for adults and teens are hybrids with flat handlebars (best for younger kids) and road bikes with drop or flat handlebars. Children nine and older are provided with a mountain bike and bike helmet suitable for their size. Children ages 6-9 can tag-alongs which are one-wheeled bikes whose front stem attaches to the parent's seat post. We also have a Burley for children under 6 years olds. Click here for Photos & Specs.

Most of the roads are asphalt but some routes include dirt for those with hybrid bikes. Cycling routes are chosen for their minimal contact with motor vehicles, scenic splendour, array of child-oriented activities en route and mileage capability. A support vehicle is within distance of the group at all times. It carries water, snacks, tools, spare parts, a first aid kid, your day packs and riders who want a lift if they get tired.

Children's Meals

Even the fussiest young eater invariably adopts a favorite local specialty and ends up ordering it over and over to test all its variations.  Souvlaki (chicken, beef or pork) is usually a winner, but there’s plenty of pasta and pizza, too.   Kids with more adventurous palates swoon over kalamari (which sounds better in Greek than squid does in English), eating it grilled, sautéed, breaded, fried and stuffed.

All to say that food choices are diverse in Greece and your children will be surprised to find themselves enjoying newly acquired flavors.  Apart from the delicious healthy cuisine, parents will appreciate the abundance of fine Greek wines to choose from to enhance every meal.
